I worked on Fading Echo as a Senior Level Designer for the whole development process, from preproduction to the actual ship (2.5 years).
Fading Echo is a third person action game made in Unreal Engine 5 with different reality layers that the players can switch to using portals. The game puts a big emphasis on fluids and their combinations as the player can manipulate them and make them interact with each others. The game main features are combat arenas, platforming and puzzles.
As Senior Level Designer on the project I’ve worked with 1 environment artist and my Lead Level Designer to make 3 levels out of the 4 the game. I had full responsibility and autonomy on these levels, I worked on them from paper concept to the ship.
The game takes roughly 10 hours to complete and is an open experience in which the players can do the levels in the order they want. Each Level is made of a mix of Arenas, Platforming sections and puzzles. They end with a Final puzzle fight arena.
There are four levels in the game:
– The Tree
– The Volcano
– The Quarry
– The Dead Wonder
I worked on the Volcano, Quarry and Dead Wonder. All these levels are divided in 3 Sources. Each source has 6 combat arenas and several puzzles, at the end of each sources there is a final puzzle that allows the player to unlock the source (To finish the game, the player has to unlock 12 sources)
I’ve learned a lot working on Fading Echo, from how to make interesting and challenging puzzles, to the creation of levels that the players can do in the order they want.
